My dad had skin cancer. We also lived in Australia, where the locals are very sun-concious and kids always wear sun hats at school recess. Plus I read a lot.
So- we try hard to be sun-safe around here. My kids wear rashguards a lot. Also hats- I do let them choose what style and my oldest two no longer like the "sun hat" look. So they have to take shade breaks at the pool. We use lots of sunblock- and yes, I know it's hard Moms, but remember that kids learn more by what we do than what we say. I use tan-in-a-can for my legs.
Coolibar has a free shipping code right now- SPRG75. It's pretty pricey so it's easy to spend $75.
Nike's kids sandals this year cover their toes (yeah! Girls are getting cute purple ones). I guess that's really another safety issue, though.

Few things make me shudder more than seeing posts on Facebook about people tanning and going to tanning beds. I just want to scream, "How old are you???" And, "Do you know what year this is???"
I'm lily-white and proud of it. I can't believe people still tan! :)
Our girls are only 27 months old, so they've had relatively limited exposure outside...but when we are going to be out in the sun, they're always wearing hats and sunscreen on their arms and legs. It's no fun, to be sure, but I can't imagine that pretty baby skin with a sunburn. :(
